General Knowledge — Chapter 8
Firsts & Records — the Lists Papers Recycle
Why this chapter matters: “Who was the first…?” is the single most recycled question form in one-paper GK. Our verified banks hold 331 questions that ask for a first: 228 on Pakistan’s firsts, 73 on the world’s firsts and 30 on space firsts. The pattern is always the same — one name, one office, one year — and the same names come round again and again: Jinnah, Liaquat, Mirza, Gagarin, Armstrong, Tagore, Curie. Learn the three master tables in this chapter and you bank a whole block of marks; confuse two neighbouring firsts (C-in-C with Chief of Army Staff, Sputnik I with Sputnik II, first census with first complete census) and you hand them straight back.

- 🔁 Most repeated: the firsts families themselves — 331 verified bank questions ask a first (228 Pakistan, 73 world, 30 space), so the master tables in Sections 1–4 are the chapter’s core.
- 🆕 Newly appeared: the Firsts of 2025 retrospective table (Section 4A) — eight firsts from the 2025 Current Affairs bank, each first askable from its 2025 month. No 🔁 or ⭐ mark is claimed for the 2025 table itself: each item rests on a single CA-bank month file, below both 🔁 limbs.
- 🆕 Newly appeared: the Space year 2025 retrospective table (Section 4B) — fifteen dated space events from the 2025 Current Affairs bank, from PRSC-EO1 in January to the Shenzhou-20 debris-delayed return in November. No 🔁 or ⭐ mark is claimed for the table itself — one CA-bank month file per item is below both 🔁 limbs.

4A. Firsts of 2025 — the retrospective table (origin year 2025) 🆕 2025
This table is a retrospective fold-in from the Current Affairs retrospective (coverage-audit item, 2026-10-31): eight firsts that entered the record during 2025, each backed by a row in the gk360 monthly Current Affairs bank (script hidden_files/goldmine-notes-count-gk08-2025firsts.py — 10 backing rows across 5 month files: January, May, June, September, October 2025) and verified against standard reporting before filing. They are still-true facts, marked with their origin year, never presented as current news. No 🔁 or ⭐ mark is claimed for the table itself — one CA-bank month file per item is below both 🔁 limbs.
| First (2025) | Name / detail | Date / note |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistan’s first indigenous electro-optical satellite | PRSC-EO1 (EO-1), SUPARCO | 17 January 2025, launched from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre, China, aboard a Long March 2D — the first of a three-satellite PRSC series. Papers ask the name and the launch site. |
| First Hindu woman Assistant Commissioner in Balochistan | Kashish Chaudhary, 25, of Noshki (Chagai district) | May 2025, after clearing the Balochistan Public Service Commission examination; met Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti in Quetta on 12 May 2025. |
| First Pakistani woman in the ICC Hall of Fame | Sana Mir, former women’s captain | 9 June 2025 — the eighth Pakistani overall in the Hall of Fame; first Pakistani woman to take 100 ODI wickets, and first Asian woman to play 100 T20Is. |
| First female chief of MI6 | Blaise Metreweli | Announced 15 June 2025, in office 1 October 2025 — the 18th “C”, succeeding Sir Richard Moore; MI6 was founded in 1909, so the CA bank’s “first female chief in 116 years” wording is the same first. The CA row names the agency, not her — her name is verified from the UK government’s announcement. |
| World’s first AI government minister | Diella, Albania | September 2025 — Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, tasked with public procurement and tackling corruption. Teach it with its qualification: the appointment is largely symbolic — Albania’s constitution requires ministers to be citizens aged 18 or over — and Diella began as a chatbot on the e-Albania portal. |
| First female Prime Minister of Japan | Sanae Takaichi | Elected 21 October 2025 (104th Prime Minister), after winning the Liberal Democratic Party leadership on 4 October 2025. The women-pioneers ladder in Section 1 now continues: Bandaranaike 1960 → … → Takaichi 2025. |
| First Arab Director-General of UNESCO | Khaled El-Enany (Egypt) | Elected by UNESCO’s Executive Board 6 October 2025 (55 of 58 votes), confirmed by the General Conference 6 November 2025 (172 of 174 ballots), in office 15 November 2025 for a four-year term — the 12th Director-General, succeeding Audrey Azoulay (2017–2025), and the second African after Senegal’s Amadou-Mahtar M’Bow (1974–1987). |
| First Latin American country to legalise euthanasia by legislation | Uruguay | Senate passage 15 October 2025 (20 of 31 votes); lower house had approved the bill in August 2025. Teach the qualification, not the bare “first”: Colombia and Ecuador had decriminalised euthanasia earlier, but through court decisions — Uruguay is the first in predominantly Catholic Latin America to do it by legislation. The law covers physician-administered euthanasia for mentally competent adults with incurable illness causing unbearable suffering; assisted suicide (patient self-administration) remains excluded, and euthanasia for minors is prohibited. |
4B. Space year 2025 — the retrospective table (origin year 2025) 🆕 2025
This table is a retrospective fold-in from the Current Affairs retrospective (coverage-audit item Slice 48, 2026-11-01): fifteen dated space events from 2025, each backed by a row in the gk360 monthly Current Affairs bank (script hidden_files/goldmine-notes-count-gk08-2025space.py — 27 tight-pattern rows over 12 month files / 1,416 questions, 17 cited rows backing the 15 table rows) and verified against standard reporting before filing. They are still-true facts, marked with their origin year, never presented as current news. No 🔁 or ⭐ mark is claimed for the table itself — one CA-bank month file per item is below both 🔁 limbs. The PRSC-EO1 row is the Section 4A anchor, repeated here so the space year reads complete; it is counted once, in Section 4A.
| Event (2025) | Detail | Date / note |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistan’s first indigenous electro-optical satellite | PRSC-EO1 (EO-1), SUPARCO | 17 January 2025, Jiuquan, China, Long March 2D — see Section 4A. |
| Pakistan–China lunar mission named | Chang’e-8, SUPARCO + CNSA | February 2025 bank row — teach it as scheduled for 2028, not launched in 2025. |
| Japan’s climate satellite on a final rocket | GOSAT-GW (greenhouse gases + water cycle) | 29 June 2025, Tanegashima, Japan — the 50th and final flight of the H-IIA rocket (in service since 2001). |
| Third interstellar object discovered | 3I/ATLAS, ATLAS survey telescope, Río Hurtado, Chile | Reported 1 July 2025 — after 1I/’Oumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019); perihelion late October 2025. |
| NASA twin space-weather satellites | TRACERS (Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites) | Launched 23 July 2025, Vandenberg, Falcon 9 — two craft studying the solar wind’s effect on Earth’s magnetosphere. |
| Iran’s communications satellite | Nahid-2, 110 kg, Iranian-built | Launched 25 July 2025 from Vostochny Cosmodrome, Russia, aboard a Soyuz rocket. |
| NASA–ISRO Earth radar satellite | NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar), dual L-band + S-band | Launched 30 July 2025 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, aboard GSLV-F16; first jointly developed NASA–ISRO satellite. |
| Pakistan’s new remote sensing satellite | SUPARCO + CETC + MICROSAT China | Launched 31 July 2025 from Xichang, China — Pakistan’s second remote sensing satellite after PRSS-1 (2018); fifth Pakistani satellite then in orbit. |
| Moon nuclear-reactor plan announced | NASA plan for a reactor on the Moon | August 2025 — teach it as a plan with a 2030 target, not a built reactor. |
| Uranus gains a 29th moon | S/2025 U1, found by the James Webb Space Telescope (NIRCam) | Announced 19 August 2025 — about 10 km across, the smallest Uranian moon found, missed by Voyager 2 (1986); a formal IAU name was still pending. |
| Israel’s radar observation satellite | Ofek-19, SAR (synthetic aperture radar) | Launched 2 September 2025 (night, local time) aboard a Shavit launcher; Ofek series since 1988, control to IDF Unit 9900 once operational. |
| Total lunar eclipse, seen worldwide | Full lunar eclipse (“blood moon”) | 7–8 September 2025 — the bank’s September “astronomical event observed globally”. |
| World Space Week theme | ”Living in Space” | 4–10 October every year; the 2025 theme, asked in the September bank file. |
| Pakistan’s first hyperspectral satellite | HS-1, SUPARCO | Launched 19 October 2025 from Jiuquan, China — hundreds of narrow spectral bands for land, vegetation, water and urban analysis; Pakistan’s third satellite of 2025 after EO-1 and KS-1. The bank’s “launched from the China space station” wording is corrected to Jiuquan. |
| Chinese crew’s debris-delayed return | Shenzhou-20 crew (Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui, Wang Jie) | Due back 5 November 2025, returned 14 November 2025 aboard Shenzhou-21 after tiny cracks — most likely from a space-debris impact — were found in the Shenzhou-20 return capsule’s window; 204 days in orbit, the longest Chinese crew stay then. |

7. Most-asked facts (from our verified past-paper banks)
- Pakistan’s offices block dominates: first President, first PM, first GG, first CJ, first C-in-C and first constitution together account for the largest share of the 228 Pakistan-firsts questions — and the same five are asked in nearly every paper.
- The 1951 census, 1956 Constitution, 1958 martial law and 1970 elections form the date quartet papers repeat.
- Space firsts are asked as a fixed set: Sputnik I’s date, Gagarin, Tereshkova, Leonov and Armstrong — in that order of frequency.
- Space year 2025 is the chapter’s new dated block: Pakistan’s three 2025 satellites (EO-1 in January, the remote sensing satellite in July, HS-1 in October) plus NISAR and 3I/ATLAS are the names a 2026 paper is likeliest to recycle from 2025.
- World women leaders are asked as a ladder: Bandaranaike (1960) first, then Thatcher and Indira as the distractors.
- Tagore 1913 and Curie 1903 are the two Nobel firsts papers return to most; the Economics first (Frisch & Tinbergen, 1969) is the rarer third.
8. Traps & confusions
- C-in-C vs COAS: Messervy was the first Commander-in-Chief (1947); Tikka Khan was the first Chief of Army Staff (1972), when the title changed. Ayub Khan was the first Pakistani C-in-C. Papers swap all three.
- Sputnik I vs Sputnik II: Sputnik I (4 October 1957) was the first artificial satellite; Sputnik II (3 November 1957) carried Laika. One bank paper wrongly calls Sputnik II the first satellite — the standard answer is Sputnik I.
- First census vs first complete census: 1872 was the first census in the Sub-Continent; 1881 was the first complete and regular one. Papers ask both, in both wordings.
- Constituent Assembly — which country?: Pakistan’s first Constituent Assembly President was Quaid-e-Azam; India’s was Rajendra Prasad. Read the country in the question.
- First Foreign Minister: the standard answer is Sir Zafarullah Khan; one bank paper keys Abdur Rub Nishtar — that key is an outlier, not the standard.
- First private airline of Pakistan: bank papers split between Aero Asia and Hajveeri; the first airline overall is Orient Airways. Answer from the options given.
- First PM of Bangladesh: papers answer Mujibur Rahman; the provisional government of 1971 was headed by Tajuddin Ahmad before independence. For the paper, Mujib is the expected answer.
- First Governor-General of Bengal vs Pakistan: Hastings (1773) belongs to Bengal/British India; Jinnah (1947) belongs to Pakistan. Same title, different centuries.
- First woman governor: Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan was Governor of Sindh (1973) — the first woman governor of a province, not Governor-General of Pakistan. Do not confuse the two offices.
- Badr-1 vs Namira Salim: Badr-1 (1990) was Pakistan’s first satellite; Namira Salim (2023) was the first Pakistani person in space. Different firsts, 33 years apart.
- Skylab vs Salyut 1: Salyut 1 (1971) was the world’s first space station; Skylab (1973) was America’s first. Papers ask both wordings.
- First Muslim Nobel laureate: Sadat (Peace, 1978) precedes Abdus Salam (Physics, 1979) — the “first Pakistani” and “first Muslim” answers are different people.
- Onchocerciasis elimination — conflicting CA-bank keys, not taught as a clean first: the CA bank keys both Ghana (December 2025) and Nigeria (February 2026) as the first African country to eliminate river blindness. Until a WHO verification settles which country, answer from the options given and do not memorise either as the settled first.
- Space-year rows held, not taught: the February 2025 bank row on an Iranian triple launch (Paya, Zafar-2, Pars) is held — a later Tehran Times retrospective names the trio Paya, Zafar-2 and Kowsar, so the third satellite and the date are unsettled; the June 2025 bank row claiming Russia “sent 100 satellites into space for surveillance” is held unverified; the December 2025 bank row quoting a SUPARCO chief that Pakistan “will step on the Moon in 2026” is held as an overstated claim, not a dated plan — the scheduled lunar item taught here is Chang’e-8 (2028); the February 2025 “deepwater Space Station in the South China Sea” row is an underwater station, not an orbital one, and is excluded; the October 2025 Chandrayaan-2 coronal-mass-ejection row is a research finding, not a 2025 mission event, and is excluded from the table.
- Hungary’s 2025 withdrawal — ICC, not ICJ: one CA-bank row (April 2025) asks for the first country to withdraw from the “international court of justice” and keys Hungary. The 2025 withdrawal was from the International Criminal Court (ICC) — announced 3 April 2025, parliament voted 29 April 2025, the first EU member to leave the Rome Statute system. The ICJ (the UN’s court) is a different body; do not carry the bank row’s wording into the exam hall.
9. Memory tricks (professional aids; no lecture covers this topic as a unit)
- The Pakistan offices ladder — J–L–M: Jinnah (GG, 1947) → Liaquat (PM, 1947) → Mirza (President, 1956). Three letters, three offices, in founding order.
- The space odd-year ladder — 57–61–63–65–69: Sputnik 1957 → Gagarin 1961 → Tereshkova 1963 → Leonov 1965 → Armstrong 1969. Every step is an odd year, roughly two years apart.
- The women leaders ladder — 60–66–69–79–80: Bandaranaike 1960 → Indira 1966 → Golda 1969 → Thatcher 1979 → Vigdís 1980. Learn the years and the names hang on them.
- The Pakistan date quartet — 51–56–58–70: census 1951, Constitution 1956, martial law 1958, elections 1970. The quartet is asked as a set.
- Pakistan’s 2025 space trio — E–R–H: EO-1 (January) → Remote sensing satellite (July) → HS-1 (October), all launched from China (Jiuquan, Xichang, Jiuquan).
- Sputnik I = first, Sputnik II = dog: the numeral matches the story — I for first, II for Laika the second craft.
10. Visuals (site build specs)
- TIMELINE — The Space Race 1957–2023: horizontal band from Sputnik I (1957) through Laika, Gagarin, Tereshkova, Leonov, Apollo 11, Salyut 1, Skylab, Badr-1 (1990) to Namira Salim (2023) — placed before Section 4 as the chapter’s orientation graphic.
- INFOGRAPHIC — Pakistan’s first offices ladder: vertical ladder Jinnah → Liaquat → Mirza with the supporting offices (CJ, C-in-C, COAS, Speaker, Senate Chairman) branching off — placed in Section 3.
- TIMELINE — Space year 2025: fifteen-point band from PRSC-EO1 (January) through GOSAT-GW, 3I/ATLAS, TRACERS, NISAR and the July Pakistan launch, to Ofek-19, HS-1 and the Shenzhou-20 return — placed in Section 4B.
- TABLE-POSTER — The women leaders ladder 1960–1980: five-row visual of Bandaranaike, Indira, Golda, Thatcher, Vigdís with flags and years — placed in Section 1.
11. Practice this topic
- Practice set: 331 verified past-paper questions in the PPSC + FPSC banks are tagged to this topic’s sub-topics (firsts in the world 73; firsts in Pakistan 228; space firsts 30) — the site serves them as this chapter’s practice set, with the IBES General Knowledge capsule questions behind them. Note: the Pakistan bucket overlaps PS Topics 9–10 (constitution, martial law, constituent assembly) by design — the site filters by tags at serve time, so a question is practised from the chapter the student is reading.
- Companion practice (retrospective): the gk360 monthly CA bank’s 2025 firsts set — 10 questions (January ×2, May ×1, June ×2, September ×1, October ×4) — served alongside this chapter’s practice set for Section 4A.
- Companion practice (retrospective): the gk360 monthly CA bank’s 2025 space set — 17 questions (January ×2, February ×1, July ×4, August ×3, September ×3, October ×2, November ×1, December ×1) — served alongside this chapter’s practice set for Section 4B.
