Urdu — Chapter 1
Urdu Grammar I–IV (Qawaid)
Why this chapter matters: this is the first chapter of a new subject — and the foundation for every other Urdu chapter. One-paper Urdu papers do not test literature alone: they test qawaid — the definitions, the counts (how many kinds?), and the one-word identification (“this example is which kind?”). Four TBT lectures (Urdu Lectures 1–4) teach this whole system as a single chain, and the IBES Urdu capsule backs it with 625 grammar MCQs — the largest single grammar bank in our sources. Learn the chain in Section 1 and every later section hangs on it. Note honestly: our PPSC+FPSC site banks carry almost no Urdu-grammar questions in question text (the grammar MCQs live in the capsule and the lectures), so this chapter teaches at full lecture depth rather than from bank frequency — the “Most-asked” section below names what the lectures and the capsule flag as repeated, not a site-bank count.
1. The chain: Qawaid → Sarf → Kalma
- Grammar in Urdu = قواعد.
- Qawaid has two parts: صرف and نحو.
- صرف = morphology — deals with الفاظ (words).
- نحو = syntax — deals with جملوں (sentences).
- Paper form: “صرف deals with what?” → الفاظ; “نحو deals with what?” → جملے.
- موضو = بامعنی لفظ — a word with meaning (e.g. پانی، روٹی، کھانا).
- مہمل = بےمعنی لفظ — a word with no meaning (e.g. وانی، ووٹی، وانا — as in پانی وانی، روٹی ووٹی).
- مہمل is NOT studied in sarf — only mozoo goes forward.
- کلمہ = a single meaningful word. کلام = two or more meaningful words.
- کلمہ has 3 kinds:
- اسم (noun) — لغوی معنی: نام.
- فعل (verb) — لغوی معنی: کام.
- حرف (particle/preposition) — no meaning alone; it shows a relation when joined with a word.
- The full chain, which the lecturer makes you recite because papers ask it: تخلص → اسمِ علم → اسمِ معرفہ → اسم → کلمہ → موضو → صرف → قواعد.
2. Ism — studied from 3 angles
Ism is studied from 3 لحاظ (angles):
| لحاظ | Kinds | The kinds |
|---|---|---|
| معنی کے لحاظ سے | 2 | اسمِ ذات، اسمِ صفت |
| استعمال کے لحاظ سے | 2 | اسمِ معرفہ، اسمِ نکرہ |
| بناوٹ کے لحاظ سے | 3 | اسمِ جامد، اسمِ مصدر، اسمِ مشتق |
معنی کے لحاظ سے
- اسمِ ذات = a name showing the حقیقت/وجود (reality/existence) of a thing (e.g. ارسلان، مارکر).
- اسمِ صفت = shows the خوبی/خامی (quality/defect) of a thing = adjective (e.g. نیک لڑکا — لڑکا is ذات, نیک is صفت).
- Note the combination the papers test: اسمِ معرفہ + اسمِ نکرہ combined = اسمِ ذات.
استعمال کے لحاظ سے
- اسمِ معرفہ = proper noun — the name of a خاص (particular) person/thing/place (e.g. ارسلان، لاہور).
- اسمِ نکرہ = common noun — عام (e.g. لڑکا، شہر، قلم).
بناوٹ کے لحاظ سے
- اسمِ جامد = neither made from anything, nor does anything form from it — “جمی ہوئی” (e.g. اینٹ، چٹان، میز).
- Jamid has 2 kinds: اسمِ نکرہ (عام — موبائل، مارکر، کتاب) and اسمِ معرفہ (خاص — ارسلان).
- اسمِ مصدر = ends in “نا” (نون الف) — remove نا and a فعل or اسم remains (e.g. لکھنا → لکھ، پڑھنا → پڑھ).
- Exception test: آنا، جانا end in نا but nothing meaningful forms after removing it → not مصدر.
- Masdar has 4 kinds: مفرد (the original state — آنا، جانا، نہانا، سونا، دھونا، رونا), مرکب (a compound of two things — بہک جانا), لازم, متعدی (see Section 3).
- خطاب = a name awarded by the government (e.g. شمس العلماء، سر، نشانِ حیدر). Allama Iqbal refused سر until his teacher got شمس العلماء.
- لقب = shows خوبی or خامی — e.g. کلیم اللہ (موسیٰؑ — spoke with Allah), حبیب اللہ (Prophet ﷺ), روح اللہ (عیسیٰؑ), نجی اللہ (نوحؑ), صفی اللہ (آدمؑ).
- تخلص = a poet’s pen name used in his poetry (e.g. Ghalib first used اسد, then غالب; Mirza Ibrahim Zauq).
- کنیت = calling by relation to mother/father/son/daughter (e.g. ابنِ مریم — Mary’s son, ابنِ خطاب, ابو تراب = حضرت علیؓ, ابو حنیفہ).
- عرف = a name twisted out of love or hate (e.g. پپو، مٹھو، محمود → مودا).
اسمِ ضمیر کی 3 اقسام (pronoun):
- ضمیرِ فاعلی = as subject/doer (میں، وہ).
- ضمیرِ مفعولی = as object (مجھے، انہیں).
- ضمیرِ اضافی = possessive (اس کا، ان کا).
- Sentence roles, and the English contrast: English is SVO, Urdu is SOV. فاعل (doer) = subject, فعل (work) = verb, مفعول = object. E.g.
- اسمِ صوت = onomatopoeic — named after its sound (کائیں کائیں، بھنبھناہٹ).
- اسمِ مکبر = the big one (e.g. دیگ، پگڑ).
- اسمِ مصغر = the small one (e.g. دیگچی، پیالی، پگڑی — paper form: “پگڑی سے پگڑ” → مکبر).
- اسمِ ظرف = shows زمان و مکان — ظرفِ زماں (time — زمانہ) and ظرفِ مکاں (place — مکان).
اسمِ مشتق کی 5 اقسام — in detail
- اسمِ فاعل (the doer) — 2 kinds:
- قیاسی = rule-based — made under a rule (پڑھنے والا، مانگنے والا).
- سماعی = no rule — accepted by hearing (استاد، بھکاری).
- اسمِ مفعول (the object/receiver) — 2 kinds:
- قیاسی (لکھا ہوا، پڑھا ہوا، آزمایا ہوا، ستایا ہوا).
- سماعی (دکھی، آزمودہ، آموختہ).
- اسمِ حالیہ = states a thing’s حالت/condition (ندیم ہنسا — ہنسنا is his حالت).
- حاصلِ مصدر = derived from مصدر (جلنا → جلن، چبھنا → چبھن).
- اسمِ معاوضہ = mentions the wages of work (پسائی/گندم پسوائی، رنگوائی، حلوائی).
اسمِ صفت کی اقسام
- صفتِ اصلی has 3 حالتیں:
- نفسی (positive — ارسلان ایک نیک لڑکا ہے).
- بعض (comparative — نیک تر).
- کل (superlative — نیک ترین).
- صفتِ نسبتی = shows نسبت to something (ملتانی، نملین، ایمرسونین، قادری، پاکستانی).
- صفتِ مشبہ = a صفت of resemblance based on حقیقت (reality).
The two book MCQs
- اردو ادب کی تاریخیں — ڈاکٹر انور سدید.
- قواعدِ اردو — ڈاکٹر مولوی عبدالحق (1914, انجمن ترقی اردو، لکھنو — verified against Rekhta in the lecture recheck).
3. Fail — the verb system
- فعل کے 3 زمانے: ماضی (past — گزرا ہوا)، حال (present — موجودہ)، مستقبل (future — آنے والا).
- فعل کی 12 اقسام: ماضی، حال، مستقبل، مضارع، امر، نہی، لازم، متعدی، معروف، مجہول، تام، ناقص.
- مضارع = covers both present and future (“وہ آئے” = he has come; “دلہا آئے تو کھانا چلائیں” = when the groom comes; ضرب المثل “آپ آئے بھاگ آئے”).
- امر = حکم (ادھر آؤ، جاؤ — from امر بالمعروف و نہی عن المنکر).
- نہی = منع (ادھر نہ آنا، اس کمرے میں نہیں جانا).
- لازم = intransitive — needs only the فاعل, no مفعول (سعید آیا، گھوڑا دوڑا، وہ ہنسا).
- Paper trap — فعلِ لازم vs مصدرِ لازم: a verb used as a noun = مصدر (English gerund analogy: “Smoking is injurious to health”, “Swimming is my hobby”). آیا → آنا، دوڑا → دوڑنا، ہنسا → ہنسنا; in “دوڑنا مجھے پسند ہے” دوڑنا is a noun.
- Masdar’s لازم/متعدی forms: اسمِ مصدرِ لازم (ہنسنا)، اسمِ مصدرِ متعدی (کھانا).
4. Harf — and Sabiqa / Lahiqa
- Recap: حرف has no meaning alone; it shows the تعلق between اسم and فعل. All 6 kinds appear in past papers.
- حرف کی 6 اقسام:
- جار = the فاعل’s relation to the فعل — نے in “ارسلان نے پڑھایا” (also اسم’s relation to خبر).
- عطف = joining words/conjunctions — اور، پھر (ارسلان اور علی، نماز اور زکوٰۃ).
- علت = سبب/وجہ — کیونکہ (PPSC repeated MCQ).
- اضافت = relation of two nouns — کا/کی/کے (کرسی کی ٹانگ).
- بیان = وضاحت — کہ.
- تشبیہ = likeness — مانند، کی طرح، صورت.
- سابقہ = prefix — comes before a meaningful word and changes/adds to its meaning: الف — مر → امر، ٹل → اٹل، ٹوٹ → اٹوٹ; با — باآدب، بانصیب; بے — بےادب، بےنصیب.
- لاحقہ = suffix — comes after: اندیش — عاقبت اندیش، دور اندیش، خیر اندیش; ناک — خطرناک.
- Paper format: given خطرناک or امر, ask سابقہ یا لاحقہ؟ → خطرناک = لاحقہ (ناک), امر = سابقہ (الف).
5. Jumlah — the sentence (نحو begins)
- نحو = the knowledge of making کلام (sentences). کلام/مرکب = two or more بامعنی الفاظ کا مجموعہ.
- مرکب کی 2 اقسام:
- مرکبِ ناقص = the speaker’s مقصد پورا نہ ہو، the point is not fully understood (نیک لڑکا، تیز گھوڑا، لال مارکر، بڑا گھر).
- مرکبِ تام = مقصد پورا، meaning fully understood (سعید آیا، طلبہ گئے، اسلم نیک ہے).
- مرکبِ تام — مسند / مسند الیہ (اسناد):
- مسند = جسے ثابت کیا جائے; مسند الیہ = جس کے لیے ثابت کیا جائے. اسلم نیک ہے — اسلم = مسند الیہ، نیک = مسند. Both together = اسناد.
- جملۂ انشائیہ vs جملۂ خبریہ:
- جملۂ انشائیہ has 5 things: فعلِ امر (تو گھر جا)، فعلِ نہی (برگر نہ کھا)، ندا (اے اللہ رحم کر)، سوال (تم نے کھانا کھایا؟)، تمنا (کاش میں پاس ہو جاتا). Paper form: “برگر نہ کھا” — خبریہ یا انشائیہ؟ → انشائیہ.
- جملۂ خبریہ = صرف خبر (declarative — an announcement that can be proved true or false: میں لاہور جا رہا ہوں).
- جملۂ خبریہ کی 2 اقسام, and their اجزا (4 each):
- اسمیہ خبریہ = مسند and مسند الیہ both اسم (اسلم گھر پر موجود ہے). اجزا: اسم/مبتدا (اسلم)، متعلقِ خبر (گھر پر)، خبر (موجود)، فعلِ ناقص (ہے).
- فعلیہ خبریہ = مسند فعل (اسلم نے قلم سے خط لکھا). اجزا: فعل (لکھا)، مفعول (خط)، فاعل (اسلم)، متعلقِ فعل (قلم سے).
6. Tarkeeb — the compounds (مرکبِ ناقص کی 8 اقسام)
- اضافی = relation of two nouns — کا/کی/کے (حرفِ اضافت).
- Memory hook from the lecture: “الیہ” میں الف ہے — الف comes first in the alphabet, so مضاف الیہ comes first.
مرکبِ اضافی کی 9 اقسام (paper format: give an example, ask which kind)
- تملیکی = مالک + مملوک (ارسلان کا گھر).
- تخصیصی = making خاص (آم کا درخت).
- توضیحی = وضاحت (جمعہ کا دن، جنوری کا مہینہ).
- ظرفی = ظرف + مظروف (دودھ کا گلاس — گلاس is مظروف, دودھ is ظرف؛ پانی کا کنواں).
- بیانی = the مضاف is made from the مضاف الیہ; opening one thing out of another (چمڑے کا جوتا، مٹی کا برتن).
- تشبیہی = تشبیہ (غصے کی آگ — سا/جیسا, like/as words).
- استعاری = استعارہ (ہوش کے ناخن، ہوش کے قدم).
- ابنی = کنیت-type (ابنِ علی، ابنِ مریم؛ علی کا والد).
- ابنی باعدنا = a smaller relation — not parent/child (علی کا مدرسہ، تمہارا محلہ، ہمارا مدرسہ).
7. Zamanay — tenses, the 6 kinds of ماضی, and گردان
- فعل کے 3 زمانے: ماضی، حال، مستقبل (the lecturer notes the “کتنے زمانے؟ — 3” MCQ has never actually appeared — kept as taught).
- ماضی کی 6 اقسام:
- مطلق = near or distant not known (اس نے لکھا).
- گردان (verb conjugation) — 6 forms in pairs, built on واحد/جمع × غائب/حاضر/متکلم × مذکر/مؤنث:
- واحد غائب: وہ آیا/آئی — جمع غائب: وہ آئے/آئیں
- واحد حاضر: یہ آیا/آئی — جمع حاضر: یہ آئے/آئیں
- واحد متکلم: میں آیا/آئی — جمع متکلم: ہم آئے/آئیں
- Note: گردان MCQs on واحد متکلم/جمع متکلم appeared once or twice; otherwise few MCQs come from گردان — learn the pattern, do not memorise every cell.
8. Wahid / Jama — number
- واحد = ایک (singular); تثنیہ = دو (dual — والدین، دارین، طرفین); جمع = more than two.
- تثنیہ is Arabic only — Urdu has only واحد/جمع. (Careful: والدین looks like a plural but is grammatically تثنیہ — two parents.)
- جمع کی 4 اقسام:
- جمع سالم = پورا کا پورا — the original word unchanged + an addition (والد + ین = والدین؛ اکابر + ین = اکابرین).
- جمع مکسر = the ترتیب changes (علم → علوم؛ کتاب → کتب).
- اسمِ جمع = collective noun — a singular word with plural meaning (فوج، پولیس، ٹیم، جماعت، لشکر).
- جمع الجمع = جمع کی جمع (رسم → رسوم → رسومات؛ اکبر → اکابر → اکابرین؛ حادثہ → حوادث → حوادثات).
- Capsule correction table (املا درستگی): the plural form is what the paper checks — دونوں اشعار (not “دونوں شعر”), and مکانات where the plural is required. When a sentence gives you a number word (دونوں، کئی، بہت), the noun after it must carry the plural.
9. Muzakkar / Muannas — gender and agreement
- Urdu nouns are مذکر (masculine) or مؤنث (feminine), and the verb and adjective agree with the noun’s gender — that agreement is what the papers actually test. The گردان table in Section 7 is the agreement table: آیا (مذکر) vs آئی (مؤنث)، آئے vs آئیں.
- There is no single spelling rule that fixes every noun’s gender — gender is learned word by word, and the capsule’s تذکیر و تانیث correction tables are the exam-facing drill. Lock these capsule-corrected pairs:
- طوطی (the idiom “چین کی طوطی بول رہا ہے”) keeps its idiom form — do not “correct” idioms by gender logic.
- The agreement test that solves most paper items: cover the noun, read the verb/adjective, and ask which gender it shows — آیا/کھٹا/کا = مذکر؛ آئی/کی = مؤنث. Then match the noun to it. The commonest paper trap is a masculine noun paired with a feminine verb (or the reverse) inside an otherwise correct sentence.
- Gender also rides inside the earlier sections: صفت agrees with its موصوف (نیک لڑکا / نیک لڑکی is the pattern the صفت section teaches), and مضاف الیہ agreement follows the مضاف (کرسی کی ٹانگ — کی because ٹانگ is مؤنث, not because کرسی is).

مرکبِ فعلی = روٹی کھانا; ترکیبی = کارخانہ، بادشاہ; مزجی = بلبلا; ترکیبِ سالم = کتاب خانہ.
-
Causative pairs:
-
فعلِ امدادی = helper verb — اصل فعل کے ساتھ مل کر بات پُر زور اور مکمل کرے (کھا چکا، بول سکتا ہے، دوڑنے لگا); Section 3’s 12 فعل kinds stay 12 — امدادی is the helper system, not a 13th kind.
-
-
OPC p. 16 set: correct sentence = “Barah-e-Meherbani kal zaroor aayen” (Section 16.10).
12. Most-asked facts (from the lectures and the capsule, flagged as repeated)
- The counts themselves: علم کی 5, نکرہ کی 5, مشتق کی 5, فعل کی 12, ماضی کی 6, حرف کی 6, ناقص کی 8, اضافی کی 9 — papers ask “کتنی؟” before they ask definitions.
- حرفِ علت = کیونکہ — flagged by the lecturer as a PPSC repeated MCQ.
- ماضی استمراری (پڑھتا تھا) — flagged PPSC-important among the 6 ماضی kinds.
- “یہ میز” میں میز کیا ہے؟ → مشار الیہ — the اشاری paper MCQ, with معطوف الیہ and مضاف as the planted distractors.
- “برگر نہ کھا” — انشائیہ یا خبریہ؟ → انشائیہ — the نہی paper MCQ.
- مصدر کا نا-test and the آنا/جانا exception — the definition question that separates مصدر from جامد.
- The لقب table (کلیم/حبیب/روح/نجی/صفی اللہ) — asked as name-to-person matching.
- The تذکیر و تانیث corrections (ہوش آیا، کی راہ، کی ناک، کا انتظار) — the capsule’s املا section tests exactly these agreements.
13. Traps & confusions
- موضو vs مہمل: وانی/ووٹی look like words but are مہمل — and مہمل is not studied. Papers offer مہمل as a sarf topic; it is not one.
- کلمہ vs کلام: one word = کلمہ; two or more = کلام. “نیک لڑکا” is کلام (مرکبِ ناقص), not a کلمہ.
- اسمِ ذات vs اسمِ صفت: in “نیک لڑکا”, لڑکا is ذات and نیک is صفت — papers ask which word is which, not what the phrase means.
- جامد vs مصدر: اینٹ/میز are جامد (nothing derives from them); لکھنا is مصدر (لکھ derives). آنا/جانا end in نا but fail the derivation test → not مصدر.
- مصدرِ لازم vs فعلِ لازم: “وہ ہنسا” = فعلِ لازم (a verb doing work); “ہنسنا مجھے پسند ہے” = مصدر (the verb acting as a noun). Same root, different kind — the sentence decides.
- معروف vs مجہول: “ارسلان نے پڑھایا” (فاعل معلوم = معروف) vs “خط لکھا گیا” (فاعل نامعلوم = مجہول).
- تام vs ناقص (two senses, do not merge): فعلِ تام/ناقص is about complete vs incomplete meaning of a verb phrase (سعید ہے needs بہادر); مرکبِ تام/ناقص is about whether the speaker’s purpose is fulfilled (سعید آیا vs نیک لڑکا). Same words, different chapters.
- مضاف vs مضاف الیہ order: اردو puts مضاف الیہ first (محمود کی کتاب); فارسی/عربی reverse it. Papers test the reversal, not just the pair.
- مشار الیہ vs معطوف الیہ vs مضاف: یہ میز → میز is مشار الیہ (اشاری), not معطوف الیہ (عطفی) and not مضاف (اضافی). The “الیہ” ending is shared; the compound type decides.
- تابعِ موصوع vs تابعِ مہمل: صفائی ستھرائی = both meaningful; روٹی ووٹی = second word meaningless. The test is the second word only.
- والدین is تثنیہ, not جمع: two parents = dual. And تثنیہ exists in Arabic only — Urdu counts it as a borrowed form, not a Urdu number category.
- جمع سالم vs جمع مکسر: والدین adds ین to an unchanged والد (سالم); علوم reorders علم (مکسر). اکابرین appears in both lists — as سالم (اکابر + ین) and as جمع الجمع (اکبر → اکابر → اکابرین); the paper’s wording tells you which level it wants.
- Islamic Kalima ≠ grammar کلمہ: site-bank “Kalma” questions (Third Kalma = Tamjeed, Fourth = Tauheed, words in the First Kalma = seven) are Islamic-studies questions. Grammar کلمہ questions ask اسم/فعل/حرف — do not let the shared spelling merge the two chapters.
- Two “علت” homonyms: حروفِ علت = ا، و، ی (sound letters, Section 16.2) vs حرفِ علت = کیونکہ (reason, Section 4). The question’s other options tell you which chapter it wants.
- Two harf taxonomies, one word-set: Section 4’s 6 kinds (جار، عطف، علت، اضافت، بیان، تشبیہ) vs the set’s simplified 4 (عطف، ربط، ندا، جار). کہ is بیان in the first and ربط in the second — answer by the paper’s taxonomy, and do not count استدراک/نتیجہ as new harf kinds; they are functional families.
- کتاب خانہ, two answers, two axes: سالم (form — both words unchanged) vs اضافی (relation — house of books). The set gives both in different series; the question’s options decide the axis.
- 3 زمانے vs 12 فعل kinds: “فعل کی اقسام؟” asked as زمانے → 3 (ماضی، حال، مستقبل); asked as Section 3’s full list → 12. Same word فعل, different question.
- ہونا, two labels: فعلِ ناقص (copula, Section 3) and لازم by the no-object test (Section 16.4) — both describe ہونا; neither cancels the other.
- مذکر/مؤنث by logic vs by usage: ہوش، راہ، ناک، دہی، چھت، انتظار follow usage, not logic — a “big/strong” noun can be مؤنث and a “soft” noun مذکر. Learn the capsule’s list, do not reason it out in the exam hall.
- فعلِ امدادی ≠ 13th فعل kind: Section 3’s count stays 12; امدادی (چکا، سکتا، لگا، رہنا) is the helper system that joins a main verb, not a new kind in that list — and “فعل کی اقسام؟” still expects 12.
14. Memory tricks (from the lectures)
- The takhallus chain: تخلص → علم → معرفہ → اسم → کلمہ → موضو → صرف → قواعد — recite it backwards from any point and you land on the right chapter. Papers ask “تخلص is a kind of what?” — walk one step up: علم.
- Alif goes first: “الیہ” starts with الف, the first letter — so مضاف الیہ comes first in Urdu. The letter is the rule.
- The نا-test: strip نا from a مصدر and something meaningful must remain (لکھنا → لکھ). آنا/جانا strip to nothing → not مصدر. One strip, one answer.
- یہ near, وہ far: point at your desk (یہ) and at the door (وہ) — قریب/بعید is a gesture, not a definition to memorise.
- SOV, not SVO: Urdu puts the verb last — آیشہ کپڑے دھو رہی ہے. If the verb is not last, you are reading English order.
- کیونکہ = علت, always: the lecturer’s repeated-MCQ flag — whenever کیونکہ appears in a حرف question, the answer is علت before you read the other options.
- Gender by the verb: cover the noun, read آیا/آئی — the verb tells you the gender. آیا = مذکر، آئی = مؤنث. Work backwards from the verb in every تذکیر و تانیث item.
- استمراری = the routine past: پڑھتا تھا، جاتا تھا، نہاتا تھا — if the past action repeats, it is استمراری. The “PPSC-important” tag is the lecturer’s own flag; give this kind an extra revision pass.
- The causative flip: if the verb takes an object after you add -انا or change the vowel (جلنا → جلانا، ٹوٹنا → توڑنا)، the new form is متعدی. Learn the pairs, not single verbs — papers ask the pair.
15. Visuals (site build specs)
- DIAGRAM — The Qawaid tree: قواعد branching to صرف (الفاظ) and نحو (جملے); صرف branching to موضو → کلمہ → اسم/فعل/حرف, with the 3/2/2/3 ism counts on the اسم branch — placed at the top of Section 1 as the chapter’s map.
- TABLE — The counts wall: the Section 10 master table rendered as a two-column revision card (question → count), printable as the chapter’s last-night sheet — placed after Section 10.
- INFOGRAPHIC — The گردان grid: 6 cells (واحد/جمع × غائب/حاضر/متکلم) with آیا/آئی and آئے/آئیں in each, gender colour-coded — placed in Section 7.
- DIAGRAM — Tarkeeb decision tree: “does the purpose complete?” → تام/ناقص; then the 8 ناقص branches with one example each (نیک لڑکا، دن اور رات، چار مارکر، یہ میز، گھر میں، صفائی ستھرائی، روٹی ووٹی، محمود کی کتاب) — placed in Section 6.
16. Grammar-pack additions — the CSS MPT 2026 practice set (660 stems)
The CSS MPT Urdu Grammar 2026 practice set (13 files, 673 rows, 660 unique stems — the q301–400 range was never issued, and the q401–500 range circulates in three overlapping series, so the unique count is what matters) was checked stem by stem against this chapter on 2026-10-31. Most of it is drill on Sections 1–9 above — the same definitions, counts and identification questions in new sentences — and is not re-taught here; it is the practice set. What follows is only what the set adds that Sections 1–9 do not teach. No 🔁/⭐/🆕 mark is claimed for this section: it rests on a single 2026 practice set, not on ≥5 exam papers, so it is taught as set material, not as bank frequency.
16.1 Harf families the set adds (beyond Section 4’s 6 kinds)
Section 4 teaches حرف کی 6 اقسام (جار، عطف، علت، اضافت، بیان، تشبیہ). The set works with functional families that cut across those 6 — learn them as families, not as a rival count (the set’s own series3 list of “4 kinds: عطف، ربط، ندا، جار” is a simplified taxonomy, and Section 4’s 6-kind lecture list stays the chapter’s count):
- حروفِ استدراک (correction / qualification) = لیکن، مگر — “but”: the second clause corrects or limits the first (“وہ آیا لیکن دیر سے”).
- حروفِ نتیجہ (consequence) = تو، پس، اس لیے، چنانچہ — the second clause follows from the first (“محنت کی اس لیے کامیاب ہوا”).
- حروفِ تعلیل کی تکمیل — Section 4 teaches کیونکہ as علت; the set adds its partners: چونکہ = کیونکہ (cause), تاکہ = غرض / مقصد (purpose), گویا = جیسے / مانو (as if), جبکہ = تضاد / مقابلہ (contrast), اگرچہ / گو = باوجودیکہ / حالانکہ (concession).
- حرفِ ندا (calling) = اے (“اے خدا!”) — the calling word itself; the punctuation side (nidaiya vs fajaiya vs istijabiya) is taught in Urdu Topic 3, Section 1, not here.
- حرفِ ربط (linking) = کہ، لیکن، کیونکہ as sentence-linkers — note the overlap honestly: کہ is حرفِ بیان in Section 4’s taxonomy and حرفِ ربط in the set’s; the word is the same, the taxonomy differs. Papers using the set’s taxonomy ask “کہ کیا ہے؟” → حرفِ ربط.
- حروفِ صوت / ندا (exclamations) = آہا!، واہ!، ہائے!، ارے!، اوہ! — واہ! = خوشی / تعجب, ہائے! = غم / افسوس (the same feeling split as Topic 3’s istijabiya / fajaiya).
- الفاظِ تائید و انکار = جی ہاں (assent) and جی نہیں (denial) — set phrases, not harf, but asked in the same block.
- تاکید = ہی، بھی — ہی = صرف / یہی (“وہی آیا”), بھی = نیز / علاوہ ازیں. ممانعت = نہ، مت (“نہ جاؤ” = نہی, Section 3).
- The استفہام system (question words, by kind — none of these sub-kinds is in Sections 1–9):
- ضمیرِ استفہام = کون، کیا (“کون آیا؟”، “کیا ہوا؟”).
- صفتِ استفہامی = کون سا، کیسا، کتنا (“کون سا رنگ؟”، “کیسا موسم ہے؟”).
- اسمِ عددی استفہامی = کتنے (“کتنے بچے آئے؟”) — a number asked as a question.
- ظرفِ استفہامی = کب (زمان — time) and کہاں (مکان — place).
- حرفِ استفہام (تعلیل) = کیوں — the “why” question word.
16.2 Sound letters — حروفِ علت، صحیح، مد، لین
This is a different “علت” from Section 4’s حرفِ علت (کیونکہ). Here علت is about sound, and the set’s count is “4 بنیادی اقسام” of letters:
- حروفِ علت = ا، و، ی — the vowel letters.
- حروفِ صحیح = the consonants — letters where the airflow meets an obstruction on the way out.
- حرفِ مد = the letter that lengthens the sound (stretching).
- حرفِ لین = the letter that softens the sound.
- Trap, stated once: if the question asks about ا، و، ی, the answer is حروفِ علت (sound); if it asks about کیونکہ, the answer is حرفِ علت (reason). Same word, two chapters.
- The set’s alphabet count: 38 حروفِ تہجی (first الف, last ے) — taught here as the set’s count, because other conventions count 39 (counting دو چشمی ھ separately). Papers using this set expect 38.
16.3 Murakkab extensions — فعلی، ترکیبی، مزجی، سالم
Section 6 teaches مرکبِ ناقص کی 8 اقسام. The set adds four forms that sit outside that 8 (and one phrase form):
- مرکبِ فعلی = a verb phrase as a compound — روٹی کھانا، پانی پینا، خود نوشت، آنکھوں دیکھا حال (verb + its object, used as one unit).
- مرکبِ ترکیبی = a fused compound whose parts no longer stand alone — کارخانہ، بادشاہ، خیر مقدم، یادگار، دستگیر، رازدان، ہمدرد (contrast with اضافی, where کا/کی/کے still shows the relation).
- مرکبِ مزجی = a blended / doubled compound — بلبلا، چمکدمک.
- ترکیبِ سالم = a compound where both words keep their original form — کتاب خانہ is the set’s example.
- ترکیبِ جار و مجرور as a sentence part = وقت پر — the جاری compound of Section 6 (حرفِ جار + اسمِ مجرور) in phrase form.
- Pack self-contradiction, flagged not hidden: the set calls کتاب خانہ مرکبِ اضافی in one series and ترکیبِ سالم in another. Both are defensible on different axes — relation axis → اضافی (house of books), form axis → سالم (both words unchanged). If a paper asks “کس قسم کی ترکیب؟” with سالم among the options, answer سالم; if it asks “کس قسم کا مرکب؟” with اضافی among the options, answer اضافی. The set’s own 3-kind list (اضافی، توصیفی، عطفی) is likewise a subset of Section 6’s 8, not a replacement.
16.4 Lazim / muta’addi — the verb-pair drill
Section 3 teaches the لازم/متعدی rule (object or no object). The set drills it with causative pairs: the intransitive base and its transitive partner, usually by internal change or an added -انا:
| لازم (no object) | متعدی (takes an object) |
|---|---|
- Three set subtleties worth one line each: سیکھنا is متعدی (it takes an object — “سبق سیکھنا”) and سکھانا is its causative, still متعدی; روانا is متعدی but روانا ہونا is لازم (the ہونا compound removes the object); ہونا itself is فعلِ ناقص (Section 3) and the set’s “ہونا لازم ہے” answer follows the no-object test — both labels describe the same verb from different angles.
- مرکب فعل (compound verb) = بات کرنا، کام کرنا، کہہ دینا — and کر دینا = متعدی مرکب. The compound’s kind follows its main verb’s object, not the helper.
- مجہول by tense (Section 3 teaches مجہول as a kind; the set drills its forms): ماضی → کھایا گیا، پکایا گیا; حال جاریہ → کھایا جا رہا ہے; and the ماضی کامل pair for the معروف side → وہ جا چکا تھا.
16.5 Small systems the set adds
- صیغہ (verb forms) by person — Section 7 teaches گردان with آیا/آئی; the set drills the کرتا forms: واحد متکلم میں کرتا ہوں، جمع متکلم ہم کرتے ہیں، واحد غائب وہ کرتا ہے، جمع غائب وہ کرتے ہیں، واحد مخاطب تو کرتا ہے، جمع مخاطب تم کرتے ہو. صیغہ itself = فعل کی مختلف شکلیں.
- Wahid / jama drill rows (Section 8’s rules, new examples): گائے → گائیں، استاد → اساتذہ، کتاب → کتابیں (and کتب by the مکسر rule)، پنکھا → پنکھے، درخت → درخت (unchanged — some nouns do not change in the plural), and the reversal trap بچے → بچہ (the question gives the plural and asks the singular).
- Zarf examples (Section 2’s ظرفِ زماں / مکاں, new instances): زمان → جلدی، پھر، ابھی، پہلے، کل; مکان → اوپر، نیچے، سامنے، یہاں.
- اسمِ کیفیت / حالت — quality and state nouns beside Section 2’s kinds: خوشی = اسمِ کیفیت، اندھیرا = اسمِ حالت، بہادری = اسمِ مصدری (Section 2).
- علمِ لغت / اشتقاق — beside Section 1’s صرف (الفاظ) and نحو (جملے): علمِ لغت = الفاظ کے معنی جاننے کا علم، علمِ اشتقاق = الفاظ کی اصل اور ماخذ کا علم. And مصدر in Arabic terminology = مبدأ الفعل (the verb’s origin).
- Word-origin rows (اشتقاق in practice): سلیقہ = عربی، ادب = عربی، آزادی = فارسی، بلاغت = عربی.
16.6 OPC p. 12 additions — فعلِ امدادی and الفاظِ متضاد
From the OPC Urdu book p. 12 (page image rendered single-page with pdftoppm and vision-read 2026-11-02). Most of that page’s grammar lines are instances of kinds this chapter already teaches and are not repeated here: its ism examples (ٹوکرا/پہاڑ = مکبر، اینٹ/درخت/دیوار = جامد، مسواک = آلہ، پیالی = تصغیر، صبح شام دن رات = ظرفِ زماں، مقیاسُ الحرارت = آلہ، شمس العلماء = خطاب، ٹک ٹک/چھم چھم = صوت، یہ = اشارہ، دار السلطنت = ظرفِ مکاں، مشتق = مصدر سے نکلا) sit in Sections 1–2; its fail definitions (مضارع = حال + مستقبل، متعدی = فاعل + مفعول کے بغیر جملہ بامعنی نہ بنے، لازم = فاعل کے ساتھ آنے والا فعل) sit in Section 3; its اصطلاحات lines (Punctuation = رموزِ اوقاف، نحو = جملوں کا علم) sit in Urdu Topic 3 and Section 1. What the chapter did not teach until now is (a) فعلِ امدادی and (b) a mutazad table — both are filed here. No 🔁/⭐/🆕 mark is claimed for this section: it rests on the single OPC source, not on ≥5 exam papers (bank script hidden_files/goldmine-notes-count-ur-opc-p12-grammar.py over 608 files / 58,098 questions — zero direct stems for the new pairs, zero Urdu imdadi stems; the 26 “auxiliary verb” rows are English parts-of-speech items, and the banks’ single mutazad row is صغر, a different pair).
- فعلِ امدادی (the helper verb): OPC’s definition, in OPC’s wording — “وہ فعل جسے کسی جملے میں اصل فعل کے ساتھ مل کر بات کو پُر زور اور مکمل کر دینے کے لئے لگایا جائے اسے فعل امدادی کہتے ہیں” — a verb joined to the main verb in a sentence to make the statement forceful (پُر زور) and complete (مکمل). The standard grammar account agrees: the imdadi verb comes with another verb and adds emphasis or completion to its meaning.
- Paper trap, stated once: فعلِ امدادی is not a 13th kind of Section 3’s 12 فعل kinds — it is the helper system that rides on a main verb. “فعل کی اقسام؟” still expects 12.
- OPC p. 12’s اسمِ کیفیت instances: نرمی، تاریکی، بیداری — new examples of Section 16.5’s اسمِ کیفیت (beside خوشی/اندھیرا/بہادری there).
- الفاظِ متضاد — the OPC p. 12 table (OPC prints قلت/کثرت and طویل/عریض twice on the page; each pair is taught once). Paper form: “X کا متضاد کیا ہے؟” → the right-hand word.
| لفظ | متضاد | لفظ | متضاد |
|---|---|---|---|
| اضطرار | قرار | طویل | عریض |
| قلت | کثرت | نشیب | فراز |
| خوابیدہ | بیدار | خالق | مخلوق |
| تصدیق | تکذیب | نظم | نثر |
| سفر | حضر | حق | باطل |
| صفر | کبر | زیاں | فائدہ |
| شر | خیر |
- The three pairs that look unusual are the standard exam answers, verified before filing: سفر/حضر appears in the standard mutazad lists and as the Rekhta compound سفر و حضر (home and away); صفر/کبر is the keyed exam answer for صفر; طویل/عریض is the adjective form of the standard dimensional pair طول/عرض (length/breadth).
16.7 OPC p. 13 additions — feeling harf kinds, waw-e-madula, umm-ul-uloom
From the OPC Urdu book p. 13 (page image rendered single-page with pdftoppm and vision-read 2026-11-02). Most of that page’s grammar lines are kinds this chapter already teaches and are not repeated here: harf-e-bayan (Section 4’s 6 kinds), harf-e-illat (Section 4), harf-e-atf (Section 4), jumla (Section 5) and the sarf definition (Section 1). What is new is three kind labels and two terms:
- حروفِ تاسف (grief words) = ہائے، اف (and the afsos family) — words spoken at grief or regret. Overlap stated honestly: Section 16.1’s حروفِ صوت / ندا already covers ہائے as a grief exclamation; tasuf is the kind label papers ask (“ہائے is which harf?”).
- حروفِ تاکید (emphasis words) = ضرور، ہرگز — words that add emphasis to speech. Overlap stated honestly: Section 16.1’s تاکید already teaches ہی، بھی; OPC’s ضرور / ہرگز are new examples of the same family.
- حروفِ انبساط (joy words) = واہ، سبحان اللہ، ماشاء اللہ — words spoken at happiness or delight. Overlap stated honestly: Section 16.1 already notes واہ = خوشی under صوت / ندا; inbisat is the kind label.
- واوِ معدولہ (the silent waw): a waw that appears in writing but is not read (as in خواب) — new here, and distinct from Chapter 3’s waw-e-ma’roof / waw-e-majhool, which turn on pesh, not on silence.
- ام العلوم = علمِ صرف: sarf is called the mother of sciences — the word-and-structure science (Section 1) carries this title.
16.8 OPC p. 14 additions — harf-e-ijab and harf-e-izrab
From the OPC Urdu book p. 14 (page image rendered single-page with pdftoppm and vision-read 2026-11-02). Most of that page’s grammar lines are kinds this chapter already teaches and are not repeated here: harf-e-atf (Section 4), wajh-e-jama (Chapter 3 Section 6, istiara’s third rukn), tashbih’s 5 arkan (Chapter 3 Section 5), istiara’s 3 arkan (Chapter 3 Section 6), majaz-e-mursal (Chapter 3 Section 7) and talmih (Chapter 3 Section 9, whose Aatish-e-Namrud example is one more talmih example, not a new device). What is new is two harf kinds:
- حروفِ ایجاب (affirmation words) = words used when affirming or confirming something in reply — ہاں، جناب (yes; sir, as a respectful assent). Papers ask them as “which harf is ‘haan’?”.
- حروفِ اضراب (correction words) = words that turn the statement to a corrected or contrasting version — بلکہ (but rather, nay). The turn, not the first statement, is the point: “not X, balkay Y”.
No mark is claimed for these two kinds. Held, not taught, from this block: OPC’s “ghata ya barha kar bayan karna” gloss for izrab — the standard definition is the turn/correction above, so the gloss is not copied; and the page’s “Ahem paidaish aur wafat” heading, whose content sits on p. 15, not p. 14.
16.9 OPC p. 15 additions — a tausifi example, a singular, and a punctuation mark
From the OPC Urdu book p. 15 (page image rendered single-page with pdftoppm and vision-read 2026-11-02). Most of that page’s grammar-adjacent lines are already taught and are not repeated here: the murakkab-e-tausifi kind itself (Section 6: توصیفی = صفت + اسم, نیک لڑکا / تیز گھوڑا / لال مارکر) and the qab qausain idiom (Chapter 6 Section 6.4, “extremely near”). What is new is one fresh example, one singular, and one punctuation rule:
- مرکبِ توصیفی — new example: “نادیہ ایک ذہین طالبہ ہے” — here ذہین طالبہ is murakkab-e-tausifi: ذہین (intelligent) is the sifat, طالبہ (student) the mausuf. Same Section 6 kind, new sentence — papers that quote this sentence want tausifi, not izafi.
- نجوم کا واحد = نجم: nujoom (stars) is the plural; its singular is najm (a star). The standard singular–plural pair, in the paper’s own wording.
- قوسین (brackets) = the parenthetical mark: a word or sentence written inside a statement as an aside takes qausain — ( ) — around it. Do not confuse with Chapter 6’s قاب قوسین idiom (“extremely near”): there qausain is part of a fixed phrase; here it is the punctuation mark itself, the answer to “a parenthetical word/sentence in writing takes which mark?”.
No mark is claimed for these three rows. Held, not taught, from this block: OPC’s underlined-کچھ line “بنے کا بیٹا کچھ کچھ کر ہی گرتا ہے” — the page gives no question for it and no standard reference was found for the line as a grammar example, so it is not taught as a rule or a proverb.
16.10. The correct-sentence item — OPC Urdu p. 16 (checked, not copied)
From the OPC Urdu book p. 16 (page image rendered single-page with pdftoppm and vision-read 2026-11-02). The page’s grammar line is a single correct-sentence MCQ, filed here because Section 5 (Jumlah, the sentence) teaches sentence correctness and this is the paper form of that teaching:
- Correct sentence: “براہِ مہربانی کل ضرور آئیں” (“Barah-e-Meherbani kal zaroor aayen” — kindly do come tomorrow). Papers print this sentence among faulty variants (wrong adab particles, wrong verb forms) and ask which is correct — learn it as a whole sentence, not as a rule: the barah-e-meherbani + kal + zaroor + aayen combination is the correct one.
No mark is claimed for this row. Held, not taught, from this page’s grammar side: OPC’s stone-related line (a wording that does not read as a complete grammar or vocabulary fact) — nothing is taught from it.
16.11. Grammar rows — OPC Urdu p. 17 (checked, not copied)
From the OPC Urdu book p. 17 (page image rendered single-page with pdftoppm and vision-read 2026-11-02). The page’s grammar lines are filed here because Section 8 (Wahid / Jama) teaches number and Section 4 teaches laqab-adjacent naming:
- Wahid → jama: ghani (غنی, rich) → aghniya (اغنیاء) — the Arabic-broken plural papers ask; learn it as a pair, not as a rule.
- Durust talafuz (correct pronunciation): Assalam-o-Alaikum (السلام علیکم) — the greeting’s correct pronunciation, with the opening al- sounded; papers print it among mispronounced variants and ask which is correct.
- Laqab examples (grammar’s naming angle): Kalimullah (کلیم اللہ, the one spoken to by Allah) = Musa and Zabihullah (ذبیح اللہ, the one offered for sacrifice) = Ismail — both are laqab (titles) in grammar’s naming system, not personal names. Note: OPC prints the second name as “ذوج اللہ”, a print slip; the standard title is Zabihullah.
No mark is claimed for these rows. Held, not taught, from this page’s grammar side: OPC’s “zarb-ul-masal ka tana ware dori” line — the saying does not read as a complete, recognisable proverb, so nothing is taught from it.
16.12. Grammar rows — OPC Urdu pp. 18–19 (checked, not copied)
From the OPC Urdu book pp. 18–19 (page images rendered single-page with pdftoppm and vision-read 2026-11-02, with a zoom re-read of the p. 18 top-right block). The pages’ grammar lines are filed here because Section 8 teaches Wahid / Jama, Section 4 teaches Harf kinds, and the laqab/khitab naming angle sits in Sections 16.7–16.11:
- Khitab vs laqab (grammar’s naming angle): Khan Bahadur is a khitab (a title of honour conferred), while Baba-e-Urdu is a laqab (a by-name/title) — papers test the kind of name, not just the person: “Khan Bahadur, qawaid ki ro se kya hai?” → khitab; “Baba-e-Urdu, qawaid ki ro se kya hai?” → laqab.
- Wahid → jama: fauj (فوج, army) → afwaj (افواج) — the Arabic-broken plural, learned as a pair like ghani → aghniya (Section 16.11).
- Mehmal (the redundant echo-word): in dhoom-dhaam (دھوم دھام), the second word is mehmal — it adds sound, not sense; the paper form asks which word of the pair is mehmal.
- Mutradif (synonym) pairs papers drill: fateh (فتح, victory) = zafar (ظفر) and aar (عار, shame/disgrace) = sharm (شرم) — learn them as fixed pairs; zafar is also the second half of Bahadur Shah Zafar’s name (Chapter 4 Section 7I), which is why the pair sticks.
No mark is claimed for these rows — see the bank script note in the chapter footer.
16.13. Grammar rows — OPC Urdu pp. 21–22 (checked, not copied)
From the OPC Urdu book pp. 21–22 (page images rendered single-page with pdftoppm and vision-read 2026-11-02). The pages’ grammar lines are filed here because Section 8 teaches Wahid / Jama and Section 16.3 teaches Murakkab kinds:
- Wahid → jama: balad (بلد, country/town) → bilad (بلاد) — another Arabic-broken plural, learned as a pair like fauj → afwaj (Section 16.12) and ghani → aghniya (Section 16.11).
- Murakkab-e-Atfi (the conjunctive compound): Huqooq-o-Faraiz (حقوق و فرائض, rights and duties) is a murakkab-e-atfi — two words joined by a harf-e-atf (here the “o”/wao between them). Papers ask the kind (“Huqooq-o-Faraiz mein kaun sa murakkab hai?”) — the answer is atfi, distinct from tausifi (Section 6: sifat + mausuf) and the Section 16.3 kinds.
No mark is claimed for these rows — see the bank script note in the chapter footer. Held, not taught, from these pages: OPC’s “najm ka mutazad sitara” line — najm (star) and sitara (star) are mutradif (synonyms), not mutazad (antonyms), so no antonym pair is taught from this line.
