Q 4 Mathematics Decimal Fractions Comparing Fractions

What is difference between the biggest and the smallest fraction among 2/3, 3/4, 4/5 and 5/6?

A

1/4

B

1/6

C

1/13

D

12/7

View answer & explanation Ans: 1/6

Correct Answer: 1/6

The biggest fraction is 5/6 and the smallest is 2/3, so the difference is 5/6 - 2/3 = 1/6.

Q 5 Mathematics Decimal Fractions Comparing Fractions

Which of the following fractions is the smallest?

A

15/9

B

7/8

C

17/12

D

13/16

View answer & explanation Ans: 13/16

Correct Answer: 13/16

In decimals the fractions are 1.667, 0.875, 1.417 and 0.8125, so the smallest is 13/16. The book key (a) 15/9 is the largest, not the smallest, and is overridden here.

Q 6 Mathematics Decimal Fractions Comparing Fractions

Which of the following fractions is greater than 3/4 and less than 5/6?

A

1/2

B

4/5

C

2/3

D

10/11

View answer & explanation Ans: 4/5

Correct Answer: 4/5

4/5 = 0.8, which lies between 3/4 = 0.75 and 5/6 = 0.833.

Q 7 Mathematics Decimal Fractions Comparing Fractions

B

23/24

C

17/24

D

13/25

View answer & explanation Ans: 17/24

Correct Answer: 17/24

17/24 = 0.708, which lies between 1/3 = 0.333 and 7/8 = 0.875. Note that (d) 13/25 = 0.52 also lies in this interval, so the item as printed is not unique; it is retained at the book key (c).

Q 8 Mathematics Decimal Fractions Comparing Fractions

Which of the following numbers does not lie between 4/5 and 7/13?

A

1/2

B

2/3

C

3/4

D

4/5

View answer & explanation Ans: 1/2

Correct Answer: 1/2

The interval runs from 7/13 = 0.538 to 4/5 = 0.8; 1/2 = 0.5 lies outside it, while 2/3 and 3/4 lie inside.

A

0.5

B

1

C

3

D

7

View answer & explanation Ans: 1

Q 23 Mathematics Decimal Fractions Simplification

Simplify: (5.32 x 56 + 5.32 x 44)/((7.66)^2 - (2.34)^2) :

A

7.2

B

8.3

C

10

D

12.7

View answer & explanation Ans: 10

Correct Answer: 10

The numerator is 5.32 x (56 + 44) = 532 and the denominator is (7.66 - 2.34) x (7.66 + 2.34) = 5.32 x 10 = 53.2, so the value is 532 / 53.2 = 10.
