About this paper

This is the Arithmetic: Clocks solved MCQ bank from Advanced FPSC & Other Federal Model Papers (Edition 32): 13 published questions (book pp. 764-765, of 15 printed) on the angle between the clock hands, the hour hand's rotation, how often the hands coincide, stand straight or at right angles, watch gain and loss, and the times the hands coincide or stand opposite. Every published answer was re-solved from scratch and agrees with the book's printed Answer Key on p. 765; two printed items were dropped because their correct answers are not among the options, and four printed options with truncation or misprint defects were corrected and flagged.

Q 1 Mathematics Clocks Angle Between Hands

Find the angle between the hour hand and the minute hand of a clock when the time is 3.25:

A

47 1/2 degrees

B

45 degrees

C

44 degrees

D

43 degrees

View answer & explanation Ans: 47 1/2 degrees

Correct Answer: 47 1/2 degrees

Hour hand at 3:25 is at 3 x 30 + 25 x 0.5 = 102 1/2 degrees and the minute hand at 25 x 6 = 150 degrees, so the angle is 150 - 102 1/2 = 47 1/2 degrees.

Q 4 Mathematics Clocks Angle Between Hands

At 3:40, the hour hand and the minute hand of a clock form an angle of:

A

100 degrees

B

120 degrees

C

130 degrees

D

140 degrees

View answer & explanation Ans: 130 degrees

Correct Answer: 130 degrees

At 3:40 the hour hand is at 3 x 30 + 40 x 0.5 = 110 degrees and the minute hand at 40 x 6 = 240 degrees, so the angle is 240 - 110 = 130 degrees.

Q 5 Mathematics Clocks Angle Between Hands

At what angle the hands of a clock are included at 15 minutes past 5?

A

50 degrees

B

57 degrees

C

67 1/2 degrees

D

70 degrees

View answer & explanation Ans: 67 1/2 degrees

Correct Answer: 67 1/2 degrees

At 5:15 the hour hand is at 5 x 30 + 15 x 0.5 = 157 1/2 degrees and the minute hand at 15 x 6 = 90 degrees, so the angle is 157 1/2 - 90 = 67 1/2 degrees.

Q 2 Mathematics Clocks Hour Hand Rotation

A clock is started at noon. By 10 minutes past 5, the hour hand has turned through:

A

150 degrees

B

155 degrees

C

160 degrees

D

165 degrees

View answer & explanation Ans: 155 degrees

Correct Answer: 155 degrees

In 5 hours 10 minutes the hour hand turns through 5 1/6 x 30 = 155 degrees.

Q 3 Mathematics Clocks Hour Hand Rotation

An accurate clock shows 8 O'clock in the morning. Through how many degrees will the hour hand rotate when the clock shows 2 O'clock in the afternoon?

A

140 degrees

B

160 degrees

C

180 degrees

D

190 degrees

View answer & explanation Ans: 180 degrees

Correct Answer: 180 degrees

From 8 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon is 6 hours, and the hour hand turns 6 x 30 = 180 degrees.

How many times do the hands of a clock coincide in a day?

A

18

B

22

C

25

D

24

View answer & explanation Ans: 22

Correct Answer: 22

The hands coincide 11 times in 12 hours, so 22 times in a day.

Q 7 Mathematics Clocks Straight Line Counts

How many times in a day, the hands of a clock are straight?

A

22

B

32

C

44

D

24

View answer & explanation Ans: 44

Correct Answer: 44

Counting both together (coincide) and opposite positions, the hands are in a straight line 22 times in 12 hours, so 44 times in a day.

Q 8 Mathematics Clocks Right Angle Counts

How many times are the hands of a clock at right angle in a day?

A

32

B

37

C

44

D

24

View answer & explanation Ans: 44

Correct Answer: 44

In 12 hours the hands form a right angle 22 times, so 44 times in a day.

Q 9 Mathematics Clocks Opposite Hands Counts

How many times in a day, are the hands of a clock in straight line but opposite in direction?

A

15

B

22

C

24

D

27

View answer & explanation Ans: 22

Correct Answer: 22

The hands are opposite each other 11 times in 12 hours, so 22 times in a day.

Clocks Gain And Loss

Q 10 Mathematics Clocks Gain And Loss

How much does a watch lose per day, if its hands coincide every 64 minutes?

A

32 8/11 minutes

B

35 1/2 minutes

C

36 1/2 minutes

D

40 minutes

View answer & explanation Ans: 32 8/11 minutes

Correct Answer: 32 8/11 minutes

A correct clock's hands coincide every 65 5/11 minutes, so this watch loses 65 5/11 - 64 = 1 5/11 minutes per coincidence; with 1440 / 64 = 22 1/2 coincidences a day, the loss is 22 1/2 x 16/11 = 32 8/11 minutes per day.

Clocks Coincidence Time

Q 11 Mathematics Clocks Coincidence Time

At what time, in minutes between 3 O'clock and 4 O'clock, both the needles will coincide each other?

A

5

B

12

C

16 4/11

D

17

View answer & explanation Ans: 16 4/11

Correct Answer: 16 4/11

At 3 O'clock the hands are 15 minute-spaces apart and the minute hand gains 55 minute-spaces in 60 minutes, so they coincide after 60/55 x 15 = 16 4/11 minutes past 3.

Q 12 Mathematics Clocks Coincidence Time

At what time between 9 and 10 O'clock will the hands of a watch be together?

A

45 minutes

B

49 1/11 minute past 9

C

47 minutes

D

52 minutes past 7

View answer & explanation Ans: 49 1/11 minute past 9

Correct Answer: 49 1/11 minute past 9

At 9 O'clock the hands are 45 minute-spaces apart, so they coincide after 60/55 x 45 = 49 1/11 minutes past 9.

Clocks Opposite Hands Time

1 solved MCQs shown directly below

Q 13 Mathematics Clocks Opposite Hands Time

At what time between 7 and 8 O'clock will the hands of a clock be in the same straight line but not together?

A

5 5/11 minutes past 7

B

5 minutes past 7

C

5 2/11 minutes past 7

D

5 1/2 minutes past 5

View answer & explanation Ans: 5 5/11 minutes past 7

Correct Answer: 5 5/11 minutes past 7

For the hands to be opposite between 7 and 8, the minute hand must gain enough to be 30 spaces from the hour hand, giving 60/55 x 5 = 5 5/11 minutes past 7 (the printed "past 4" in option (a) is a misprint for "past 7", see header).

Questions

Paper practice FAQs

How many questions are in the Arithmetic: Clocks MCQ bank? +

13 questions, published of 15 printed in the book. Two items were dropped, never inferred, because their correct answers do not appear among the printed options.

What does the Arithmetic: Clocks bank cover? +

The angle between the hour and minute hands at a given time, how far the hour hand turns over a stated interval, how many times a day the hands coincide, stand in a straight line, stand opposite or at right angles, how much a watch gains or loses per day, and the exact times the hands coincide or stand opposite.

Are the answers verified? +

Yes. Every published answer was re-solved from scratch — angle as the difference of 30 times the hour plus half the minutes and 6 times the minutes, coincidence after 60/55 times the minute-space gap, and watch loss from the 65 5/11-minute correct coincidence interval — and agrees with the book's printed Answer Key on p. 765.

Which other exams does this bank help with? +

Clock problems appear in the arithmetic and general-ability sections of FPSC, PPSC, NTS, PTS and CSS MPT one-paper exams, so the same methods apply across all of them.
